She doesn't know why but she knows that when she's all alone, feels like its all coming down She won't turn around The shadows are long and she fears if she cries that first tear, the tears will not stop raining down [CHORUS] So stand in the rain Stand your ground Stand up when it's all crashing down You stand through the pain You won't drown And one day, whats lost can be found You stand in the rain She won't make a sound Alone in this fight with herself and the fears whispering if she stands she'll fall down She wants to be found The only way out is through everything she's running from wants to give up and lie down. [CHORUS] So stand in the rain Stand your ground Stand up when it's all crashing down You stand through the pain You won't drown And one day, whats lost can be found You stand in the rain So stand in the rain Stand your ground Stand up when it's all crashing down Stand through the pain You won't drown And one day, whats lost can be found [CHORUS] So stand in the rain Stand your ground Stand up when it's all crashing down You stand through the pain You won't drown And one day, whats lost can be found You stand in the rain |
In the world of geisha's, most things revolve around the men and that is why I chose this song. In the beginning of the song it says "been painting your face like a geisha would". I thought this was relevant to the book because geisha's paint their face with white paint when going out to tea houses. In the beginning of the book it mentions the white paint. "She took some time to wipe her hands clean on a rag, and then moistened one of her flat makeup brushes in a dish of water and rubbed it in the makeup until she had a chalky white paste. She used this to paint her face and neck, but left her eyes bare, as well as the area around her lips and nose." (62). This is an essential piece of a geisha's life. Another thing in the song that I can relate to the book is when it says "sugar daddy gonna make you happy, sugar daddy gonna make it nice, sugar daddy gonna give you candy, but you're gonna pay sugar daddy's price". The way this relates to the book is because the men in a geisha's life are similar to a sugar daddy. The men make money and pay for things while the geisha are either at home or out entertaining. The part in the song about sugar daddy's giving them candy, but they have to pay the price made me think about how geisha receive money and a home from the guy, but they have to devote themselves to the man and also satisfy them with sex when they ask for it. Meaning that the money is the candy and paying the price is giving the man sex and devoting their lives to them. The last thing in this song I thought was interesting is "Oh smile... give me your best smile. Like a sweet little girl." This relates to how the apprentice geisha are always told to smile and they always have to put on their best appearance.
As a maid, Sayuri went through many obstacles that were meant to tear her down. In the song "Stand in the rain" the artist writes that even if you are fighting with yourself, staying strong and standing your ground will help you find what is lost and soon help you find your place. She never gave up, even after she ran away and practically destroyed her future. Sayuri knew deep down that if she stood her ground and didn't give up, her future could still become something great. |
